A dead tree does not disappear from the forest floor in an instant. Decomposition is a natural, organic process that can vary significantly depending on the tree’s species. Hardwoods, such as oak, maple, and birch, will typically rot sooner, within 46 to 73 years.

This timeline is affected by many factors. Temperature plays a big role; decomposition is faster in hot, moist environments and slower in cold, dry environments. It takes longer to break down larger trees than smaller trees, so tree size matters as well. Soil conditions have a big effect on decomposition rates, including the amount of moisture in the soil and the presence of beneficial bacteria and fungi.

Throughout nature’s slow process, the dead tree becomes a home to many woodland animals. Insects, fungi, and bacteria gradually disintegrate the wood, restoring the soil with nutrients.
